Diving in Taveuni
Dive the Garden Island

The Somosomo Strait which runs between Taveuni Island and Vanua Levu is one of Fiji's best known dive destinations. Many divers come to Fiji just to witness the excellent soft coral blooms that occur when the current is running just right. Large bushes and protrusions of pink, brown and orange span out to capture the passing nutrients and create a spectacle of colour as the current takes you past.
Taveuni scuba diving promises plenty of pelagic life as well and it is worth exploring beyond the strait itself since the rich waters that lap the shores of Fiji's 'Garden Island' are home to very good diving sites in a variety of locations.
Highlights
Rainbow Reef - One of Fiji's best-loved dive sites is found here in the Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu. When the current is flowing just right the soft corals emerge in their fullest display of colour - giving the site its name. Drifting along past this profusion of life and colour you can spot all manner of fascinating marine life on this bejewelled reef and plenty of big stuff cruising around the vicinity.

How to Dive Taveuni
The best way to dive here is by staying in one of the resorts on the island. This allows you quick and easy access to the Somosomo Strait and the other Taveuni diving sites, and can also make it easier for you to explore some of Taveuni's topside attractions. We recommend two resorts here which will provide you both with comfort and a high quality diving service:
Maravu Plantation Resort - a small luxury resort with a wide range of recreational activities.
Garden Island Resort - a popular and dedicated dive resort, in a prime location next to the Rainbow Reef.

Diving Season
The resorts of Taveuni don't close since the diving is good all year round. April to October sees the main diving season, with July and September offering the best visibility. The water is at its warmest outside the main season when rain is more likely.
