The Climate and Best Time to Visit
The most popular time to book your Djibouti liveaboards is undoubtedly between October and February. During these months, the northeast monsoons bring cooler air and a critical natural phenomenon: a plankton bloom in the nutrient-rich waters of the Gulf of Tadjoura. This annual feast concentrates in the inner gulf and the enclosed Ghoubet Bay, drawing the main attraction - juvenile whale sharks. Air temperatures are at their most pleasant, ranging from 22°C at night to around 29°C during the day, while the water holds steady at a comfortable 25° to 28°C. Visibility can vary in the bays due to the plankton, but that very richness is what brings the sharks to the surface. This is the window for encounters with the gentle giants, and the liveaboards position themselves accordingly, splitting time between the inner gulf sites and the archipelago.
As the weather warms from March onwards, the whale sharks become less predictable, but the focus shifts. From March through June, the seas remain calm, and water temperatures climb from 28°C to 30°C. This is an excellent period to explore the Seven Brothers archipelago. With the currents in full force, the nutrient upwelling creates a magnet for pelagic life. This is when you have a stronger chance of encountering large schools of jacks and barracuda, alongside mantas and mobula rays. The air temperatures begin their climb towards the summer highs, reaching 35°C by May, but the stable conditions make for reliable cruising and minimal itinerary changes.
From July to September, the heat intensifies significantly, with air temperatures routinely exceeding 40°C and water temperatures peaking at 32°C. While diving is still possible, it is less comfortable, and the strong southerly winds can create choppier conditions. Most liveaboard operators schedule their maintenance or operate on a reduced schedule during this period, making it the least popular time for a dedicated diving safari.
For the majority of divers, the optimal window is from October to February for the classic whale shark experience, combined with healthy reef diving. If you are an advanced diver primarily interested in the reef structure and pelagic action of the Seven Brothers, with fewer boats around, then the March to June shoulder season is a compelling alternative. Ports of Departure and How to Get There
Djibouti is located close to the Horn of Africa, in the Gulf of Aden and at the entrance to the Red Sea. All liveaboard trips use the harbour in Djibouti City. Once you arrive at Djibouti International Airport (code JIB), a boat representative will greet you outside the arrivals hall. Major airlines that fly to Djibouti include Emirates, Qatar Airways, Air Djibouti, Air France, Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Fly Dubai, and Kenya Airways.
Most visitors must purchase a 90 day short-stay visa online. You can apply for the visa and check all the latest entry requirements at Djibouti e-visa website.
Before you finalise your plans, it's worth taking a moment to consider protection for your trip. Diving in remote locations like the Seven Brothers or Ghoubet Bay is a fantastic adventure, but it also means having the right cover in place brings real reassurance. We recommend ensuring your policy includes specific coverage for scuba diving, including medical evacuation and potential hyperbaric treatment, as well as protection against unforeseen travel disruptions. Our preferred providers specialise in dive travel; you can obtain a tailored quote and arrange your cover in our insurance section:

Places to Stay
To get the most from your time in Djibouti, we suggest arriving a day early or staying on after your liveaboard. A night ashore gives you breathing room to catch up on your internal routine - perhaps an evening walk along the Corniche or a quiet morning before transfer. For booking, we point our clients toward HotelsCombined. It scans multiple booking sites at once, so you can quickly compare what’s available near the marina or somewhere with a pool to stretch your legs after a week at sea.
