This may be a tiny and remote tropical island but it has more than its fair share of amazing underwater encounters. Sangalaki Dive Lodge has the only accommodation on the island, so it's the best situated resort in the region from which to enjoy all the sights without requiring long boat journeys.
Rooms: 12 Diving in: Sangalaki, Samama, Kakaban and Maratua Dive type: Boat and beach dives Divers: Max. 24
First off, if you want to dive surrounded by manta rays there can be nowhere better - all year round you are more or less assured of big numbers. Then at Kakaban Lake you can swim with enormous numbers of stingless jellyfish at the famous Jellyfish Lake. The sensation of this thriving scene is out of this world.
Turtles rule the waves on Sangalaki. You can witness every stage of their life cycle: from mating, egg laying and hatching, to the first instinctive scurry of the young into their ocean home. In fact, turtles are so popular here, you can even adopt one!
The 12 beach chalets are rather basic but offer you excellent views of the ocean and loads of privacy. As part of their eco-friendliness policy, they have been built on stilts to allow turtles access to the beach at night.
Dive sites include the amazing manta encounters around Sangalaki itself, plus optional trips (to be arranged at the island) to visit Kakaban Island where you can swim with millions of stingless jellyfish in the famous Jellyfish Lake.
The Sangalaki Dive Lodge conducts activities off of its 2 fully equipped, custom built diving boats fitted with twin-outboard engines.
The boats feature:
8 metre fibreglass speed boats
Kit up area
Steel entry and exit ladders
Dive guides accompany you on all dives, and drinking water are available for your refreshment.
Boat journey time is 10 - 30 minutes, depending on whether you are exploring the local sites or other nearby islands.
Due to its remote location and as a reflection of their commitment to diver safety, Sangalaki has established its own recompression chamber on the island.
We strongly advise any diving vacationers to have their own insurance to cover evacuation and treatments. See our insurance programme for our recommended holiday insurance that includes cancellation cover and diving accidents.
Naturally the normal dive first aid equipment is also on hand.
