Some places ask you to choose between genuine wilderness and genuine comfort. Sorido Bay Resort refuses the question. Here, on a secluded stretch of Kri Island, you get both: the richest reefs on the planet, and a standard of accommodation that feels genuinely luxurious without ever feeling inappropriate.

The numbers speak for themselves. Sorido Bay Resort sits on a house reef that once yielded 374 fish species on a single dive, a world record documented by Dr. Gerry Allen. That’s not a boast. It’s simply what happens when you build a resort in the heart of the Coral Triangle’s most biodiverse waters. The Dampier Strait flows past your doorstep, and with it come mantas, wobbegongs, pygmy seahorses, and schools of barracuda that turn the water silver.

7 air-conditioned sea view cottages line the shoreline, each one spacious, thoughtfully appointed, and deliberately low-impact. You wake to the sound of water lapping at the reef. You step onto your veranda and look out over the turquoise strait. Inside, you will find a minibar, safe-deposit box, bathrobes, and complimentary toiletries, small touches that matter after a week of diving. Free WiFi reaches both the cottages and the lounge. There are TVs and a movie library for the rare evening you are not too tired to watch one.

The heart of Sorido Bay Resort is the open-air lounge: a 2-level space with a wet area downstairs for camera kit and dive gear, and a dry area upstairs where guests gather to compare notes over coffee. A small museum of WWII artefacts sits alongside the shop: unexpected, but entirely in keeping with a resort run by people who have spent decades in this region. The lounge also houses something genuinely unique: the world’s first SEACAM Center. Underwater photographers can access the latest housings, domes, and strobes, attend workshops led by SEACAM Ambassadors like Don Silcock, or simply benefit from guides trained specifically in photo composition and lighting. Blackwater diving, that strange, mesmerising pelagic drift into the open ocean at night, is offered exclusively here.

Most guests choose the unlimited diving package. It makes sense. With so many world-class sites - Cape Kri, Blue Magic, Sardines, Manta Sandy - within a 10-minute boat ride, why would you not dive as much as possible? The package includes 4 guided boat dives per day (except Fridays), unlimited jetty dives on Saturdays, and free nitrox for certified enriched air divers. Dive groups are small: 3 guests per guide, sometimes fewer.

Evenings at Sorido Bay Resort are unhurried. Buffet meals blend Indonesian flavours with Western staples: fresh seafood, gado-gado, pasta, salads. Beer and soft drinks are available though many guests bring their own spirits from duty-free. The dining room looks out over the reef. Turtles surface. The sky turns violet. And somewhere below the waterline, the night creatures begin their shift.

Conservation runs through everything. Sorido Bay Resort employs predominantly Papuan staff, many of them former shark finners and dynamite fishermen now retrained as dive guides. The resort is a Green Fins member, supports zebra shark re-wilding, and donates 10% of annual profits to the Raja Ampat Research and Conservation Centre. Staying here means contributing directly to that work.

Sorido Bay Resort is not for everyone. It is for divers who want to dive the reefs of Raja Ampat without sleeping on a liveaboard bunk. It is for photographers who need space to spread their gear and professionals who can answer their questions. It is for people who understand that luxury in a remote setting means something different, and something better, than luxury in a city. Come for the 374 species. Stay for the comfort, the conservation, and the quiet magic of a bay that feels like your own.
Accommodation at Sorido Bay Resort divides into 4 distinct types, each named after Papuan regions. The bungalows are spacious, well-appointed, and genuinely pleasant to return to after a day in the water.

Sentani Bungalow (5 available):
60 sqm. Ensuite bathroom. King bed plus an optional single. Maximum 3 guests. These are the resort's doubles: spacious, comfortable, and positioned to catch the morning light.

Kaimana Bungalow (1 available):
90 sqm. Ensuite bathroom. The family option: a king bed, plus 1 or 2 singles on request. Sleeps 4. This bungalow gives you room to spread out, gear, cameras, kids, all of it.

Kumawa Bungalow (1 available):
85 sqm of interior space, plus a 25-sqm front terrace and a 19-sqm outdoor shower. Ensuite bathroom. King bed plus an optional single. Maximum 3 guests. The outdoor shower is the standout: hot water, open sky, and the sound of the reef.

Kebar Villa (2 available):
120 sqm. A 40-sqm front terrace. Ensuite bathroom. King bed plus an optional single. 2 guests maximum. These are the resort's penthouse equivalent: generous, private, and absurdly comfortable for a remote dive resort.

What You Will Find in Every Bungalow:
Sorido Bay Resort provides a thoughtful list that acknowledges both diver needs and simple human comfort.
- Air conditioning: adjustable, effective, and quiet - Ceiling fan: movable, for those who prefer natural airflow - Unlimited WiFi: satellite-based, fine for email and messaging - Minibar, stocked with soft drinks, beer, and fresh juice (pay separately) - Daily housekeeping, including turndown service in the evenings - Free laundry service: drop it in the morning, collect it clean by late afternoon - In-bungalow camera station: 220V and 110V outlets, work desk, plenty of space to spread your housing and strobes - Safe-deposit box: large enough for passports, cash, and a laptop - Bathrobes: cotton, soft, unexpectedly luxurious - Hair dryer: because even divers have bad hair days - Fresh water shower: good pressure, unlimited hot water - Soap, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion provided in the bathroom. No need to pack your own. - Drinking water, refilled daily, no single-use plastic - Veranda with seating, facing the sea
Most days consist of 3 guided boat dives (2 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon) and an optional dusk or night dive. Most of the dives take place at the excellent local sites of the Dampier Strait with the dive boat returning to the resort after each dive. Sites include Cape Kri, Sardines, Manta Sandy, Blue Magic and Mioskon. There are 30 or so sites within a 10 km radius of Sorido Bay.

Most days follow a simple, effective pattern. Boats leave the jetty between 7-8 am, timed to catch the best combination of tide and light.
* Morning: 2 guided boat dives. The boat returns to the resort between dives. You surface, swap stories, drink coffee, and let your computer clear without sitting on a cramped liveaboard deck.
* Afternoon: 1 guided boat dive, usually after lunch.
* Evening (optional): A dusk or night dive. The house reef is excellent for night dives, but boat night dives to nearby sites are available on request.

Dive Type Options: Guided, Unguided, and Something Special:
* Guided boat dives are the backbone of the operation. Small groups, typically 3 guests per guide, sometimes fewer. The guides are mostly Papuan, many trained from scratch by the resort. They know these reefs intimately. * Jetty dives (unguided) are available any time, but particularly popular on Saturdays. Buddy teams only. Tanks (air and nitrox) are free for package guests.
* Night dives are offered as a fourth daily dive. The house jetty is excellent; boat night dives to sites like Yenbuba Jetty or Saporkren can be arranged.
* Blackwater diving: drifting offshore at night into the open ocean, watching strange pelagic creatures rise from the depths, is offered exclusively at Sorido Bay Resort. Not every night. Not for beginners. But if you have the experience and the nerve, it is unforgettable.
* Fluorescence night dives are available on request. Special blue lights make corals and critters glow in psychedelic neon colours.
* PADI courses run from Intro dives through to advanced, nitrox, and deep specialty. Refresher courses are strongly recommended if you have not dived in over a year; currents here can be lively, and good buoyancy matters.
* Nitrox is free for certified enriched air divers throughout your stay. If you are not yet certified, the course takes half a day and quickly pays for itself in bottom time.

Snorkelling: Not Just an Afterthought
The reefs around Sorido Bay Resort are part of the Cape Kri system, which means snorkellers get access to world-class coral without needing a tank. Turtles and blacktip reef sharks are almost guaranteed. Schools of bumphead parrotfish, each the size of a small suitcase, cruise past the jetty with surprising regularity.
Many dive sites are accessible to snorkellers, though not all since depth and current rule some out. The house reef alone will keep you busy for days. Guided snorkelling trips can be arranged on request.

The dive centre at Sorido Bay Resort is a PADI Five Star facility. That means professional standards, well-maintained gear, and staff who actually care about the details.
* Equipment storage - Staff wash and store your gear each day. You collect it from the room each morning, ready to go.
* Camera table & rinse tank - Freshwater tank with low-pressure hose. Dedicated table with power nearby.
* Tanks - 12-litre aluminium. INT (A-clamp) valves as standard. Nitrox tanks use DIN with an INT adaptor.
* Compressors & nitrox membrane system
* Jetty shower
* Equipment rental - Limited rental stock. Book in advance to avoid disappointment. No wetsuits available for rent, bring your own.
* Gear storage lockers
* Camera charging - 220V and 110V outlets in bungalows and the camera room.
* SEACAM Center - World's first. Test-drive housings, domes, strobes. Rent Canon or Nikon rigs. Photo-trained guides.

Safety & Emergency:
Sorido Bay Resort takes safety seriously, quietly and competently. Here is what is in place:
* Qualified medical staff onsite, not just first aid, but actual medical personnel.
* Emergency oxygen on every dive boat (DAN system, demand & constant flow masks) and at the jetty.
* First aid kits on all boats plus resort clinic.
* Dive insurance mandatory for all divers. If you don’t have annual cover, you can purchase short-term DAN insurance at the resort on arrival.
* No decompression diving, strict NDL limits enforced due to remote location.
* Refresher policy: Recommended after 12 months without diving. Mandatory for divers with <50 logged dives who haven’t dived in 12+ months (dive manager’s discretion).
* Daily dive briefings cover currents, entry/exit, and emergency procedures.
* Satellite communication for medical evacuation coordination.
* The nearest hyperbaric chamber is in Manado, with evacuation protocols in place.

The Saturday Difference:
Saturday is the day the guides rest. No boat diving until 6 pm. But Sorido Bay Resort turns this into a feature, not a limitation.
* Unlimited shore diving from the jetty (tanks provided free)
* Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards available
* Red Bird of Paradise excursion in the afternoon (donation-based)
* Spa open for massages
* Restaurant open all day, with 24/7 coffee, tea, and snacks
It is a chance to slow down, to explore at your own pace, to remember that diving is not a competition. By Sunday morning, you will be ready to go again.
Sorido Bay Resort occupies a peculiar and wonderful niche. It is, first and foremost, a place for serious divers. But it is also a place where comfort has been thought through. Not added as an afterthought, but woven into the experience from the start. The facilities here are not numerous. They are, however, exactly what you need.

The reefs around Sorido Bay Resort are part of the Cape Kri system, which means snorkellers get access to world-class coral without needing a tank. The house reef alone holds turtles, blacktip reef sharks, schools of bumphead parrotfish, and an astonishing variety of hard and soft corals. Guided snorkelling trips can be arranged to sites like Friwenbonda, Yenbuba Jetty, or even the famous Cape Kri itself.

Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are free for guests. Paddle out to the local sandbar at low tide. Drift along the coastline and watch kingfishers dart from overhanging branches. The water is calm, the current negligible, and the perspective from surface level is unexpectedly beautiful.

Tucked away behind the main building, the Healing Hut offers massage services in a simple, open-walled structure. There is no piped music or aromatherapy diffusers. Just skilled therapists working out the knots from days spent in currents. Book at reception. Spaces are limited. And yes, it is perfectly acceptable to fall asleep halfway through a massage.

Birdwatching: The Saturday Special and Beyond:
The Red Bird of Paradise trip runs every Saturday at 3 pm. A short boat ride to a neighbouring village, followed by a 45-minute hike through primary forest. You stand in the understorey and watch as males perform their extraordinary courtship dance. Binoculars are provided. Bring walking shoes.
For the truly dedicated, a Wilson’s Bird of Paradise trip can be arranged (minimum 2 days’ notice, any day except Saturday).

Even without the organised trips, the island offers daily wildlife. Spotted cuscus doze in branches. Coconut crabs the size of dinner plates lumber across the paths. Paradise kingfishers flash electric blue against the green.

The heart of Sorido Bay Resort is its main building: a large, open-air structure that catches the sea breeze from every direction. Upstairs, the lounge offers comfortable seating, a TV with DVD player, and a comprehensive library. A water dispenser sits in the corner, always full, always cold.

Facilities at a Glance:
* Lounge - Open-air. TV & DVD player. Comprehensive library. Water dispenser. Guest computer.
* Free WiFi in lounge and cottages. Satellite-based, fine for email, variable for streaming.
* Laundry - Complimentary service. Drop in morning, returned same day.
* Water activities - Kayaks (free). Stand-up paddleboards (free). Snorkelling gear rental. Guided snorkelling trips (extra cost).
* Land activities - Jungle trekking (self-guided). Red Bird of Paradise excursion (Saturdays, donation-based). Wilson’s Bird of Paradise trip (pre-booked, extra cost).
* Wellness Healing Hut spa - massage services (book at reception).
* Small souvenir shop on-site.
* General - Sun chairs. 24/7 tea, coffee, drinking water.
Meals at Sorido Bay Resort are served buffet-style in the main lounge building, overlooking the turquoise water. You serve yourself, find a seat facing the reef, and eat at whatever pace suits you. No fixed seating. No dress code. Just good food, honestly prepared.

Breakfast arrives cooked and substantial. Eggs any style. Home-made bread, still warm. Fresh tropical fruit - papaya, pineapple, watermelon - sliced and ready. Muffins appear most mornings, alongside traditional Indonesian dishes like bubur ayam (chicken porridge) or nasi goreng for those who prefer savoury first thing. Freshly squeezed fruit juice, tea, and coffee complete the picture. You will need the calories. The first dive boat leaves at 8 am.

Lunch and dinner follow a similar rhythm. A typical spread includes: a salad bar, pasta or rice dishes, a meat option (often chicken or beef), fresh seafood, and at least one curry. Soups appear most evenings. Vegetables are never an afterthought. The kitchen uses locally sourced ingredients where possible, which in Raja Ampat means fresh fish, tropical produce, and spices.

Appetisers are served half an hour before dinner, a small touch that encourages guests to gather, swap dive stories, and ease into the evening. Dessert is created by the in-house patissier. Do not expect French patisserie standards. Do expect something sweet, homemade, and genuinely welcome after a day in the water.

Fruit, coffee, tea, and cookies remain available 24/7. Grab a banana between dives. Pour a coffee while you log your sightings. The kitchen does not shut down.
Beer, juices, and canned soft drinks are available for purchase. The minibar in each cottage carries the same selection.
Many guests bring their own spirits from duty-free. The resort has no issue with this, and the staff will happily provide mixers and ice.

The kitchen will make every effort to accommodate dietary needs - vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, allergies - but they cannot perform miracles without warning. Please advise us before you arrive. The kitchen will plan accordingly.
