The 35-metre Ocean Sapphire liveaboard accommodates a maximum of 22 guests across 11 en-suite cabins on awesome diving trips around Maldives' central and southern atolls. The layout prioritises personal space, with 4 top-deck cabins featuring the added luxury of private bathtubs - a rare find on a liveaboard. By moving all diving operations to a dedicated dhoni, the mothership retains a peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere, allowing guests to spread out and relax between dives.

Life aboard the Ocean Sapphire centres around a few well-designed social spaces. The main deck houses an air-conditioned saloon and restaurant where 2 chefs prepare a mix of local and international dishes, served by waitstaff. For those who prefer open air, the shaded stern offers a spot to watch the wake, while the expansive sundeck, complete with a Jacuzzi, provides an ideal perch for reading or stargazing. The liveaboard vessel’s European management ensures a standard of service and maintenance that regular Maldives visitors have come to rely on, with practical amenities like wi-fi (available for a small fee) and a small open-air bar adding to the experience.

The real genius of the Ocean Sapphire, however, is the separation of the dive deck. All equipment storage, tank filling, and surface intervals happen on the accompanying dhoni. This means the compressor noise never reaches the main boat, preserving the tranquillity of the mothership. With space for up to 30 divers on the dhoni, there is ample room to gear up without congestion. Between dives, you return to a quiet vessel where your cabin and the common areas remain untouched by the business of diving, a small detail that makes a significant difference on a week-long liveaboard trip.

Diving operations are led by a team of 3 or 4 instructors who know the atolls intimately. Depending on the route, guests can experience the famed sites of North and South Male, or venture further to the deeper channels of Ari Atoll. The Ocean Sapphire liveaboard cruise itineraries are designed to offer variety: from the thila (underwater pinnacles) covered in soft corals to the cleaner stations where reef manta rays gather. Night dives, such as the one at Alimatha Junction mentioned by returning guests, offer encounters with feeding mantas under torchlight. Whale shark sightings in Ari are always a possibility, though the crew respects the wildlife, ensuring encounters remain responsible rather than rushed.

Guest feedback consistently highlights the warmth of the Ocean Sapphire crew and the quality of the guiding. As one returning diver noted, the combination of friendly, helpful and experienced dive guides with comfortable living conditions creates a relaxed yet professional atmosphere. The boat’s superb rating from multiple reviewers reflects this balance, whether it is the enormous effort for kitchen and service during a beach barbecue, or simply the ease of having a separate dive vessel, the experience feels well-considered.

For certified divers looking to cover significant ground without sacrificing downtime, The Ocean Sapphire liveaboard hits a sweet spot. It offers the range to reach the best sites in the central and southern Maldives, the stability of a proven crew, and the kind of onboard comfort that lets you recharge fully - all at an affordable price. Whether you are there for the big pelagics or the intricate reef life, this liveaboard is a reliable and enjoyable gem for your underwater adventures.

Maldives Central Atolls (8 Days / 7 Nights - 18 Dives)

Trip highlights: whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, shark action, manta rays, schooling fish & big pelagics

Diving environment: advanced divers, beginner divers, drift diving, very popular, wreck diving

Dive sites and activities: North Male, South Male, Ari, Felidhoo (or Rasdhoo) atolls

Day 1
Upon arrival at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport in Male, you will meet the Ocean Sapphire tour leader and board the Ocean Sapphire liveaboard, your home for the week. You will then receive a welcome drink, a detailed boat introduction, and be assigned your cabin. After a buffet lunch, the bell will announce your first dive, typically a check dive at a nearby site. You will return to the liveaboard for a well-deserved hot shower and time to relax before dinner is served. Ocean Sapphire remains anchored for the night, departing the harbour only on the following morning.

Core Days
This Central Atolls tour focuses on the world-renowned diving across North Male, South Male, Ari, and either Felidhoo or Rasdhoo atolls. The cruise is designed to maximise encounters with large pelagics, taking advantage of the strong currents that sweep through the channels between the atolls. These currents attract grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, schools of tuna, and seasonal oceanic manta rays.
In North and South Male Atolls, you will explore various underwater environments, including dramatic drop-offs and submerged islands, or thilas. These formations are coated in beautiful hard and soft coral, attracting colourful fauna such as pufferfish, moray eels, and the giant Napoleon wrasse. The South Male area is also noted for a rewarding wreck dive, providing an artificial reef that has become a refuge for fascinating macro creatures.
The Ocean Sapphire then heads to Ari Atoll, widely considered one of the best locations globally for filter feeders. This area provides high chances of encountering manta rays at their cleaning stations, and is one of the most reliable places in the Maldives to spot whale sharks. Depending on the route, the Ocean Sapphire liveaboard may also include Felidhoo Atoll for thrilling current dives, or the spectacular Rasdhoo Atoll, which is celebrated for potential early morning hammerhead shark sightings.
Please note that there is only one dive scheduled on the last full day of the trip, before the boat returns to Male for an optional city tour.

Day 8
The departure morning is your final chance to enjoy breakfast aboard the Ocean Sapphire. Following the meal, a transfer will take you back to the airport.

Your day begins at around 6:30 am, when a crew member moves quietly through the saloon, setting out hot water for tea and coffee, a flask of juice, and a plate of biscuits. This is the Ocean Sapphire pre-dive ritual. You gather sleepily, listen to the first dive briefing of the day, and step onto the dhoni - the dedicated dive vessel that follows the liveaboard, ready for the first entry into the Indian Ocean.

After the first dive, you return to the main boat not just to log your sighting of reef sharks or a passing turtle, but to a proper breakfast. The buffet is laid out with fresh tropical fruit, cereals, yoghurt, and a hot selection that might include eggs cooked to your liking, sausages, toast, beans, and lightly cooked vegetables. It’s the kind of meal that sets you up for the morning.

The second dive happens mid-morning. By the time you surface, shower, and find a spot on the sun deck or in the shade, lunch is ready. Meals aboard the Ocean Sapphire liveaboard are a genuine highlight. Expect vibrant, freshly prepared salads, rice and pasta dishes, and a daily showcase of Sri Lankan curries - a taste of local tradition that guests often talk about long after the dive trip. There is always fresh fish or meat, and plenty of cooked vegetables like green beans, broccoli, or cauliflower. A meal here is substantial, but never heavy.

The afternoon is yours. There might be time to read, nap, or chat with fellow divers before the third dive briefing. Once that dive is done, the evening stretches ahead. Dinner is another full buffet, often followed by a dessert that feels like a small reward-perhaps a creamy rice pudding or a perfectly set crème caramel.

Part of the experience on a week-long cruise is the break in routine. One afternoon, the dhoni might ferry everyone to a sandbank or a deserted island. Here, with your fins in the sand and the boat anchored offshore, the Ocean Sapphire crew lights the barbecue. Grilled fish and meats, salads, and cold drinks are shared as the sun sets. It is a simple thing, but in that setting, it feels like an event.

Throughout the week, the dining crew learns your preferences. Juice, tea, and coffee are available all day. The atmosphere is relaxed and sociable, but with enough space to retreat when you need quiet. The Ocean Sapphire liveaboard is not a hotel at sea; it is a base camp for dive exploration, and the daily routine is designed simply to support that - good food, good company, and as much scuba diving as you can comfortably manage.
